Many thanks to groups and individuals who supported the commission.

No dates are known for Tesco's exhibition or submission of application.

Milngavie is a small Scottish town with its own local character

This is why many people choose to live here. They particularly value its town centre shopping area, in a conservation area at the historic core of the town. See a map of the conservation area » Its special qualities are described in the Council's Conservation Area Appraisal (2006) » (pdf 4M)

Background: Tesco in Milngavie

In 1992 a foodstore was built alongside the river in the public park south of the town centre. The development was required to blend with the surrounding conservation area and parkland. It was later taken over and expanded by Tesco. Although the traditional town centre suffered, a fragile balance was achieved.

In 2009, Tesco lodged an application for a massive Tesco Extra, totally inappropriate for the site and the town. This was refused by the Council and the subsequent appeal dismissed. Archive of original website concerning Tesco's first application. »

Tesco has indicated its intention to lodge another application. A presentation to community groups indicated that this would be only cosmetically different from the last, again largely ignoring the context of the site and the aspirations of the surrounding communities.
